CLAUDE SAUNDERS: ATHLETE/BUILDER (Rowing)


• Olympic athlete (1936,1948)

• Rowed for Leander Boat Club from 1932 to 1948

• Upon retirement from active rowing, devoted his energy to rebuilding the sport of rowing in Hamilton, Ontario and Canada

• The first Canadian to hold a FISA referee License

• The first Canadian to referee the sport of rowing at the 1964 and 1968 Olympics

• Was Chairman of the world's largest rowing regatta - "The Royal Canadian Henley Regatta" from 1958 to 1998

• Was one of the original founders of The Canadian Secondary Schools Rowing Association and Chairman of the Secondary Schools Regatta for over 30 years

• President of Leander Boat Club in Hamilton from 1948 to 1982

• Was on the Board of Trustees of Leander Boat Club until his passing in 2007

• Was a member of Canada's Sports Hall of Fame, The Order of Canada and the Hamilton Gallery of Distinction. Was an Athlete, an Official, a Builder and a Team Member for the sport of rowing, in Hamilton, Ontario and Canada.
