• Hamilton native who played minor hockey and Junior B for Hamilton Aerovox.

• Refereed in the Ontario Hockey Association from 1955-1959.

• Joined the NHL officiating staff in 1960 and refereed in that league until 1972.

• Was the first official signed by the World Hockey Association in 1973 and worked WHA games until the league folded in 1979.

• Became the WHA Referee-in-Chief in 1976.

• Only referee to officiate in both Stanley Cup Finals and Avco Cup Finals.

• Worked 1,425 regular season and 190 playoff games in the NHL and WHA

• Officiated the first and last games in the WHL

• First NHL Officials Association President

• His jump to the WHA is credited with raising NHL officials salaries.
