MEL LAFORME: Athlete (rowing)


• Hamilton resident from a young age

• Attended Westdale HS, began rowing in Grade 9

• Part of the winning crew for the Hamilton City Champ

• Member of the football and wrestling teams during this HS career

• Member of Guelph University Athletic Hall of Fame, induced in 2002, receiving a Wrestling, Football and Rowing

• Member of the Canadian Rowing Team since 1974

• Member of the Olympic Rowing team in 1976 (8), 1980 (boycott), 1984 (spare to the 8) and 1988 (quad)

• Member of the World Championship Quad in 1985 and a bronze medalist in 1986 and 1987

• Won in the Quad at the Royal British Henley

• A gold and silver medalist from the Pan AM games in 1983

• Maintained his interests in athletics and rowing - rowing in Masters program with Leander, Ridley, Cambridge, competing in World Masters competitions where he has won gold medals in doubles and quad

• A teacher with the Hamilton Wentworth School board - coaching and providing inspiration. He continues to be an elite athlete

• Recently won the Can. Indoor rowing championships in Toronto and has qualified to participate in the World Indoor Rowing Champ

• Coaches at the HS level and guest coach at McMaster, Guelph and Trent Universities.
